What are Fat Dissolvers?

A fat dissolver is an injectable treatment that destroys fat cells in the treatment area. The fat cells that are hit with this dissolver typically never come back in that area. KYBELLA® is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that destroys fat cells in the treatment area under the chin to improve your profile.

The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. What to Expect

Pre-Treatment Consultation

Before starting treatment, your healthcare specialist will examine the area under and around your chin to determine if KYBELLA® is right for you. Then, your specialist will tailor your treatment to the amount of fat under the chin and your aesthetic goals. It is important to plan the Kybella treatment with your healthcare provider and make sure you are the right candidate for the procedure. Discuss your medical history, as well as any cosmetic procedures you had done on your face, neck, or chin. Tell your healthcare provider about any trouble swallowing or bleeding problems. The research on Kybella’s effect on a fetus or infant is still ongoing, so let your healthcare provider know if you are nursing or pregnant, or planning to become pregnant in the near future.

  • Do not apply any creams, lotions, perfume or makeup etc. to the treatment areas prior a to be treated, prior to treatment.
  • Schedule your Kybella® appointment at least 2–4 weeks prior to a special event which you may be attending, such as a wedding or a vacation (due to bruising and prolonged swelling).
  • Avoid anti–inflammatory/blood thinning medications 10–14 days prior and 3–4 days post treatment. Medications such as: Aspirin, Vitamin E, Gingko Biloba, Ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Omega 3/Fish Oil Supplements, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, and other NSAIDS have a blood thinning effect and can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after injections.
  • Do NOT consume alcoholic beverages 1 week prior to treatment (alcohol may thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising).
  • Consider taking Arnica tablets beginning 1 week prior to injections to prevent bruising.

Your Appointment

Before the procedure, your healthcare provider will mark the injection sites with a marker and may administer a topical numbing agent or ice pack to ease any pain or discomfort. Usually 20 to 30, and up to 50, injections are used under the chin. The exact number of injections will depend on the amount of fat you have under your chin and your desired profile. The acid then works gradually to kill fat cells, which are metabolized by the body over the following weeks.

The number of treatment sessions necessary varies for each person. Multiple treatments might be needed to reach optimal results. You can receive up to six Kybella treatments, with at least one month between each session.

Aftercare

  • You will experience swelling and bruising for 3–5 days post treatment, which will begin decreasing over a period of a few weeks. Swelling can last 4–6 weeks.
  • Many patients need 2–3 treatments for desired results, please schedule a follow–up appointment 4–6 weeks after your first treatment.
  • Ice packs may be used to the treated area during the first 12 hours. Ice for 15 minutes every hour. However, icing can be discontinued if uncomfortable.
  • Do NOT massage the injection site. Swelling, tenderness, bruising, numbness, and areas of firm nodules may occur and will resolve over time without intervention. Results are not immediate. Results may be seen as early as 4–6 weeks post–treatment, but full results will not be noticed until 12 weeks post–treatment. Numbness can last up to 12 weeks.
  • Do not wrap the treated area, and do not take anything to prohibit swelling the day of the treatment or for the days following treatment.
  • You may feel a sense of heaviness following the treatment, especially when laying on your back. This sensation may make you feel short of breath. However, Kybella® does not compromise your airway. Notify our office if any significant swelling, bleeding, pain, dusky discoloration, difficulty swallowing or smiling, or if fever occurs.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures of heat for 24 hours post treatment (i.e. Jacuzzi, hot showers etc.).
  • Do NOT consume alcohol or sodium for 3 days post treatment to avoid excess swelling.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours post treatment.
  • Sleep on your back with your head elevated to decrease swelling.

WHAT IS SUBMENTAL FULLNESS?

Submental fullness is a gathering of excess fat beneath the chin, commonly known as “double chin.” It can be something you’ve had your whole life due to genetics, or start to appear as you get older or if you gain weight.

HOW LONG WILL RESULTS LAST?

When injected into fat under the chin, KYBELLA® causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. After reaching your desired aesthetic, further treatment is not expected.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

Since everyone’s chin profile is different, the number of treatments varies from patient to patient. Your healthcare specialist will help determine how many treatment sessions you need based on the amount and distribution of your submental fat and your personal treatment goals. Each KYBELLA® treatment session is given at least 1 month apart, and you should not receive more than 6 treatments. In clinical studies, 59% of patients received 6 treatments.

WILL I NEED TIME TO RECOVER?

After KYBELLA® treatment, you will likely have some swelling, bruising, or numbness under your chin. Be sure to inform your healthcare professional if you develop an uneven smile, facial muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing or injection site problems such as bruising, hair loss, open sores (ulcers), and damage and tissue cell-death (necrosis) around the injection site. Call your healthcare provider if you develop open sores or drainage from the treatment area.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?

The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness around the treatment area. These are not all of the possible side effects of KYBELLA®. Call your healthcare provider if you develop open sores or drainage from the treatment area or for medical advice about side effects.
