What are Biostimulants?

Biostimulation therapy stimulates collagen and elastin regrowth and is used to restore skin elasticity and firmness. The most popular biostimulants are Sculptra and Radiesse. This treatment delivers compounded proteins that strengthen the body’s natural growth factors. It connects to tissues on a molecular level, and the skin begins to regenerate, resulting in facial fullness, reducing wrinkles, and providing a natural glow. Results appear 8-12 weeks after each treatment. Most patients require 1-3 treatments to achieve desired results.

Sculptra

Sculptra® Aesthetic works with your body to restore your skin’s thickness and volume by stimulating the production of collagen. Sculptra® can restore the frame of the face and replace thin crinkly skin with firmer, younger-appearing skin. It is also effective for improving skin thickness anywhere on the body and can treat wrinkles, creases, and folds to give you a youthful, refreshed appearance.

Sculptra® consists of poly-L-lactic acid particles, derived from fruit acids, and it has safely been used in surgery for more than 25 years. Unlike injectable fillers that produce an immediate result when injected, Sculptra’s biodegradeable, biocompatible particles stimulate the body’s production of collagen to thicken the skin and it may take clients several weeks to see results. Your results will improve over several months, especially with subsequent treatments.

Radiesse

Radiesse® is a collagen-stimulating dermal filler that is robust enough to fill and lift the skin, and when diluted, it can also improve skin texture and elasticity anywhere on the body. Radiesse® is often used to improve the deeper folds such as the nasolabial folds and marionette lines, and is also a good choice for restoring or enhancing the volume in the cheeks, augmenting the chin and jawline, and it can mask prominent bones & veins in the backs of the hands.

Radiesse® is calcium hydroxylapatite, or CaHA, a dermal filler that provides immediate contouring and stimulates collagen and elastin production. Hyperdilute Radiesse is the process of thinning out Radiesse filler with a mixture of saline solution and Lidocaine. This mixture is injected into areas where the skin shows sagging and looseness. As collagen and elastin begin to grow, the skin firms and tightens. Your results will improve over several months, especially with subsequent treatments.

What to Expect

Pre-Treatment Consultation

During your consultation, your medical provider will evaluate your area of concern and review your medical history. While the risks associated with dermal fillers are minimal, you need to fully disclose your medical history prior to treatment, as certain allergies, skin and neurological conditions, or medications can jeopardize your safety or results. For instance, you need to tell your cosmetic surgeon if you have been taking NSAIDs (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen) or blood thinners, as these increase the likelihood of bruising.

Your Appointment

Just before the actual treatment, the area will be cleaned, and you may be given a topical anesthetic to numb the area prior to injection. Many filler products also contain lidocaine, a mild anesthetic, which is intended to help minimize discomfort during and after your treatment. Your provider will then inject a precise amount of filler strategically beneath the skin. Depending on the product and the areas treated, you should be able to notice results immediately after receiving filler injections. Some patients experience mild bruising and swelling, but these are temporary and should subside over the days following treatment. You will be able to go back to your normal activities right after treatment, but your medical provider may ask you to take the day off from exercise or other strenuous activity.

Aftercare

A clean cloth dipped in cold water (cold compresses) wrung out, and applied to the injected area may be used immediately after treatment to reduce swelling.
Avoid touching the treated area within six hours following treatment so you do not accidentally injure your skin while the area is numb. After that, the area can be gently washed with soap and water.
Avoid taking aspirin, NSAID, St. John’s Wort, blood thinners, and high doses of Vitamin E supplements for one week after treatment. These agents may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site.
Minimize strenuous exercise and exposure to excessive heat, sun, or UV lamps for the first 24 hours after treatment. Exposure to any of these may cause temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the injection site. Until there is no redness or swelling, avoid exposure of the treated area to intense cold or heat such as sun lamps or sun bathing.
