What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck or hands. A chemical solution is applied to the skin that causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off. The new, regenerated skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. Chemical peels can be used to treat acne scars, age spots, hyperpigmentation, fine lines & wrinkles, melasma, sun damage, and aging skin. There are three basic types of chemical peels:

Superficial peel

Alpha-hydroxy acid or another mild acid is used to penetrate only the outer layer of skin to gently exfoliate it. This type of peel is used to improve the appearance of mild skin discoloration and to refresh the face, neck, chest or hands.

medium peel

Glycolic or trichloroacetic acid is applied to penetrate the out and middle layers of skin to remove damaged skin cells. This type of peel is used to improve age spots, fine lines and wrinkles, freckles and moderate skin discoloration.

deep peel

Trichloroacetic acid or phenol is applied to deeply penetrate the middle layer of skin to remove damaged skin cells. Deep peels remove moderate lines, age spots, freckles and scars, leaving a dramatic improvement in skin appearance.

What to Expect

Pre-Treatment Consultation

During your consultation, we will discuss the specific issues you want to address and will recommend a chemical peel based on your skin type and desired results.

  • Do not go to a tanning salon or endure prolonged and unprotected sun exposure for at least 3 weeks before or after this treatment.
  • Discontinue use of Vitamin A and all other active skincare products for 5 days before and after your treatment.
  • Ensure you are well nourished and hydrated in the days leading up to and for your appointment. Healthy skin responds best to this treatment and will yield more favorable results!

Your Appointment

On the day of your peel, you will first be prepped for the treatment. This includes cleansing your skin thoroughly. After you are prepped, your clinician will apply the peel quickly and evenly. Your clinician will watch your skin carefully to remove the peel at just the right time. After the peel comes off, your skin will be treated as needed. Clients who get a medium peel may need cool compresses followed by a lotion or cream to soothe their skin.

Aftercare

All peels require some at-home care. The following table shows you what you can expect…

  • At-home care: Lotion or cream applied until the skin heals, followed by daily use of sunscreen.

FAQs

HOW LONG DO RESULTS LAST?

After you stop peeling, your skin will have an extra GLOW, but you will experience more noticeable results in 4-6 weeks post-treatment, as the peel continues to promote cellular turnover. Peels typically last up to 4 months.

IS IT SAFE?

Thanks to more than 50+ years of continuous improvement, VI Peels are safer and more comfortable than even before. You can achieve optimal results with just one treatment.

WHO SHOULD NOT GET A PEEL?

While generally considered safe for virtually everyone with every skin type, a Peel is NOT recommended with those individuals with susceptible skin, who have conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, diabetic skin issues, autoimmune skin conditions or impaired wound healing.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?

Typically, there are minimal side effects apart from discolored skin during the peeling process. Although extremely rare and usually from an allergic reaction to one of the chemicals in the peel, a client may experience burns, bruising or scarring.
